My Brown Baby Boy

Today marks the three year anniversary of having my dog Logan in my life. Getting him was a huge transition for me. Just one week earlier, by beloved Zero was hit by a car and had to be put to sleep. I knew right away that I needed to rescue another dog. I spent the week searching online and soon found myself at the Bridgeport Pound…. not a nice place. In this kennel was this brown dog sitting so politely, as if he was waiting for me. I slipped a leash on him and took him home.

I’d like to say that it was a smooth transition, but it was anything but. Logan was unruly, and I was emotionally unprepared for such a crazy dog. Six months of obedience training later, I found myself with a much more tolerable dog, and slowly he crept his way into my heart. He has developed into one of the sweetest, mushiest mama’s boys that you could ever meet.

He is not without his quirks:
  • He will not go outside in the rain. He’ll just turn around and look back at you as if to say, “you’re kidding, right?” He’s been known to hold it for days.
  • He also doesn’t like damp or long grass. He sticks to the little path he’s worn in the backyard.
  • He likes to sleep on the bed… under the covers, occasionally with his head on the pillow.
  • He's polite. He asks to come up on the furniture. But will then stare at you pathetically if there is something on the couch in the spot where he wants to lay (remote, phone, scrap of paper, etc.).
  • His toys are like his children. He’ll bring them out into the backyard like he wants to show them the view. He has also been caught herding them all up in a pile around him.

He also adores his Daddy, who I fondly refer to as my Moosie Daddy (like my baby daddy), although The Boy thinks I love the dog more than him:

Boy: Okay, if there was a fire in the house, who would you save, the Moose or me?
Girl: Well, you have opposable thumbs… You’d be able to open the door and get out yourself.
    Boy: I knew it!!

The Boy also loves to serenade Logan… Have you ever seen a dog swoon? It’s a sight to see!

    Nicknames:
  • The Moose/Moosie
  • Moosiepants
  • Moosiepaws
  • Brown Baby Boy (we like this one bc it reminds us of poop)
  • Log (his Grandma’s favorite)

In many ways, I fee like Zero gave his life so that Logan can have a good one with us. I’ll always miss Zero. Logan will never take Zero’s place in my heart, but he’s carved himself a spot of his own.
