When a tree falls across the road, and you're not paying attention, does it make any noise?

The most bizarre thing happened to me on my way into work this morning. I'm sitting in traffic, per usual. I've got a cold, so I'm a little foggy and more out of it than usual. I look in my rear view mirror and notice that there are no cars behind me. I'm literally the last car... About a quarter of a mile back, all of the cars that were behind me are stopped and I see what looks like either smoke or a dirt cloud.

The people getting on the highway on the next entrance ramp look confused... but not as confused as me. I saw nothing, heard nothing. My windows were up, but I was only listening to NPR on my radio, and it wasn't loud by any means. So I can't help but wonder, first of all, what the hell happened, and second, why I didn't notice if it was the cars directly behind me? I'm thinking that I escaped potential injury, but I'm also a little concerned about how coherent I was behind the wheel.

So, what did happen on that stretch of the Merritt Parkway? As you can probably tell from the title, a tree, yes TREE fell across the road. I only know that because I heard it later on the radio's traffic report. How on earth did i miss something like that?

Happy Monday everyone! ;)
Safe driving!
