Goodbye, My Friend

I got a phone call today that I wish I didn't. The wife of my friend Chris, who was one of my closest friends when I lived in California, called me to let me know that he passed away. He was traveling for business, told to her that he wasn't feeling well and was going to take a walk. She didn't hear from him for several hours and had the hotel look for him, where they found him in the room. He was already gone.

The cause of his death isn't known yet. They ruled out seizure (he was epileptic), aneurysm, heart attack, and several other things. I just hope for the family's sake that they figure out what happened.

The worst part? They were expecting their first child in a couple of months. Life can just be so unbelievably cruel sometimes.

I'm clear on the other side of the country, so it's hard for me to process. I'm heartbroken and shocked nevertheless.

Where ever you are, my friend, I hope you are at peace. I love you, buddy.

Gettin' Hitched

Here's to Brian and Heather, who got engaged last night. Brian sprung the question on Heather's 30th birthday. They're obviously thrilled, and we're so excited for them. Now they just have to tell us when the trip to Vegas is, so that they can be married by Elvis.

I told her that your 30s are better than your 20s, but she didn't believe me. Silly girl. ;)

Congratulations to you both! We love you guys!

Some People Just Know Me

I came into the office today to come across a pleasant birthday surprise. I telecommuted yesterday, so that The Boy could take me out for a fancy dinner. My friend Ken came into my office looking guilty, holding a canvas bag. I, of course was suspicious... He reaches in and pulls out a nicely wrapped gift. I open it up to see a Roy, The Toxic Boy squishy doll (pictured at left).

For those of you who don't know, Roy is a character from the Tim Burton book, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy: and Other Stories, and contains a poem all about him.

Ken told me that he chose Roy to go along with my office decor... Nightmare Before Christmas, of course! He said that Roy can also protect me from nasty, toxic people, here in the office and elsewhere. Let me tell you, that is something I could use in my life!

The gift came with a card that had pictures of dogs drinking out of toilets on the front of it. I didn't think that Ken was inside my head like he is, but he did a great job. I guess it doesn't hurt that he holds a PhD in Neuroscience from Yale, specializing in psychiatrics.

Thanks, Ken!!

Zen Ruiner

The Boy and I use this term regularly. In particular, he likes to tell me that I'm a Zen ruiner when I park in front of the house instead of over by the garage. He doesn't like the view of the house obscured by a car... even my cute adorable MINI.

Anyways... Yesterday at work, I was talking to a friend of mine, who likes to rearrange the toys in my office on a regular basis. I was getting ready to leave and I notice this when I turn in the direction of my Zen Garden:

Ruining Zen

It took me a second for it to compute...

Hey! Zero is defiling my Zen Garden! A Zen garden is NOT a litterbox! Now, that's a zen ruining move if I ever saw one.

My friend cracks up... apparently, he was waiting the whole time he was there for me to notice what he had done. If nothing else, I'm reliable in that I give people the reaction that they're after.

Inside my head

Said to me by my perceptive friend Eric, as I rummaged through my purse looking for a business card:
Your purse is a lot like your brain. Outwardly is looks neat and tidy, but when you look closer inside, you see that there is stuff all over the place. It's kind of scary in there.

Yep, that about sums it up!
